Virtual vs. In-Person Therapy: Which Option is Right for You?

One of the biggest updates to my practice this year is the addition of an in-person therapy office. For a long time in my practice, I have worked exclusively with clients virtually, and I've seen firsthand how effective and convenient online therapy can be. At the same time, I know that some people value having a dedicated space to step away from daily distractions and focus entirely on themselves. Because I now offer both virtual and in-person therapy, I wanted to break down some of the unique benefits of each option to help you decide what feels like the best fit for your needs, schedule and goals.

If you've been considering therapy, one of the first questions that can come up is whether virtual or in-person therapy is “better”. The good news? There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.

Both virtual and in-person therapy can be highly effective. The best choice often comes down to your lifestyle, preferences and what helps you feel most comfortable opening up and doing meaningful work.

As a therapist serving adults, couples, men, and new parents throughout Indiana and Arkansas, I offer both virtual (Indiana and Arkansas) and in-person (in Indiana) sessions because I know that healing and growth don't look the same for everyone.

The Benefits of Virtual Therapy

Virtual therapy has become increasingly popular since Covid, and for good reason.

Convenience and Flexibility

One of the biggest advantages of online therapy is accessibility. You can attend sessions from your home, office or another private space without adding commute time to your day.

This can be especially valuable for:

  • Busy professionals

  • New parents managing childcare schedules

  • Individuals with demanding work hours

  • People that don’t have easily accessible transportation

When life feels overwhelming, removing barriers can make it easier to prioritize your mental health.

Comfort of Familiar Surroundings

Many people find it easier to open up when they are in a familiar environment. Being in your own space can help reduce anxiety and create a sense of comfort during difficult conversations.

Greater Consistency

When therapy is easier to access, people are often more likely to attend regularly. Consistency is one of the most important factors in making meaningful progress and sustainable change.

Virtual sessions can help reduce missed appointments due to weather, transportation issues, or scheduling conflicts.

The Benefits of In-Person Therapy

While virtual therapy offers convenience, there is still something unique about sharing physical space with another person.

A Dedicated Space for Reflection

Walking into a therapy office creates a clear separation from daily responsibilities and distractions. For many clients, simply entering a calm, private environment helps them shift into a more reflective mindset.

The therapy office becomes a place where your only job is to focus on yourself.

Fewer Distractions

At home, it can be easy to get interrupted by work notifications, household tasks, pets or family members. In-person sessions provide a dedicated space where your attention can remain fully on the conversation and your goals.

Stronger Sense of Presence

Many clients describe in-person therapy as feeling more connected and grounded. Being face-to-face can enhance communication and create a greater sense of presence, particularly when discussing emotionally significant topics.

For couples, in-person sessions can also provide a neutral environment where both partners can feel heard and supported.

Which Therapy Option Is More Effective?

Research consistently shows that virtual therapy and in-person therapy can both be effective for treating anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, life transitions, stress and many other mental health challenges.

The most important factor is often not the format itself, but the quality of the therapeutic relationship and your willingness to engage in the process.

In other words, the best therapy format is the one that allows you to show up consistently and feel comfortable doing the work.

You Don't Have to Choose Forever

One benefit of offering both virtual and in-person therapy is flexibility.

Some clients prefer in-person sessions from the start. Others begin virtually and transition to in-person care later. Many choose a combination of both depending on their schedule and season of life.

Therapy should fit your life, not create additional stress.
